Entry from: Cairns, Australia Entry Title: "In the Tablelands" Entry: "Having ruled out the ridiculous original idea of driving from Melbourne to Cairns on account of the thousands of miles (literally) involved in three weeks, I had to bite the bullet and pay for a budget busting flight to Cairns high up on East Coast from where we would work our way down some 2500 kilometres to Brisbane. We had decided that less would be more in such a huge country, and much of the interesting wildlife lay in the rainforests of Queensland and three weeks would allow us to do the area justice, rather than rush to cover more miles but potentially see little other than the dashboard of the car. Driving is a fantastic and economical way to backpack, but it is not the most sociable in comparison to riding the many backpacker buses. With that in mind, I'd booked us in to a fourteen bed room but, as was to become an annoying if amusing feature of our early adventures, we turned up and found we were sharing with just one other person – a Scotsmen called Richard. When he left after a couple of nights, I found myself with only Tony for company and I've known him for 27 years – he's just a fluffy duck.
